Passage
2024
Installation (murals, textiles, watercolors on paper)
Makiko Furuichi was born and raised in Japan. Now living in France for over 10 years, the artist is known for her colorful work inspired by the animal and plant world, which is very present in Japanese culture. Her work is distinguished by a prolific output of watercolors on paper, fabric, frescoes and sculptures. Lightness and freshness emerge from her compositions, which are both joyful and enigmatic.
Discovering the Chamonix valley, Makiko Furuichi was struck by the richness of the local flora and fauna. She became interested in the creatures that roam the woods and mountains. The singularity of the ecosystems specific to each floor of the massif led her to imagine a work made up of strata. The work created for the Hôtel Lyret is an installation comprising a mural and six textile panels: a bewitching whole that invites the viewer to lose himself in the composition.
To create Passage, Makiko Furuichi drew inspiration from ancestral Japanese beliefs, in particular the figure of the Yôkai. In Japanese folklore, the Yôkai is a supernatural creature, often associated with forest spirits. These spirits can be benevolent or malicious, or even resemble human vices and virtues. Yôkai have also long been used to justify disasters – such as natural disasters – and prevent their occurrence.
